Kabney, Bhutanese men scarf

A kabney  is a silk scarf worn as part of the gho, the traditional male attire in Bhutan. The kabney has deep roots in Bhutan's history and culture, originally serving as a symbol of social status and authority within the country's hierarchical society. It is worn over the gho, draped over the left shoulder and tied in a specific way to show respect and adherence to cultural traditions.

The wearing of the gho and kabney is encouraged in Bhutan as part of driglam namzha the official code of etiquette and dress. The gho is mandatory for schoolboys and government officials. Wearing the kabney is a careful and meaningful process. It involves folding and draping it in a precise manner, reflecting the wearer’s respect for tradition and social customs. The kabney is always placed over the left shoulder and tied at the right waist, with part of it hanging freely. This method ensures the kabney stays in place during various activities and indicates the wearer’s readiness to fulfill their responsibilities.

Typically, the kabney measures about 90 inches in length and 12 inches in width and is often made of raw silk, giving it a unique texture and look.
